C&C: Covt. Ops content that crashes XCC Mixer | Prokopis | 01:46 25-07-2005 | | |
Hmmm, could've sworn I used to have an account here a few years ago :/. Ah well.
Hey, mr. van der Spek, how's it going? Still around here, I see; that's good, that's good.
Say, I've been running into some issues with a couple o' files inside some of the MIX containers of C&C: CO lately. In fact, I was getting the same probs a few months back when I first came across a ripped ~17MB version of CO; I had even asked a few other folks to try doing the same thing on their own OS/Mixer setups, just in case it was something on my end (I got win2000, and use the 1.44 version of Mixer), but it always ended up crashing the program, no matter what environment it happened in. Since it was a messed up - and pirated - pack to begin with though, I didn't give it much thought after that and left it alone. Recently, however, I managed to get a hold of the original Covt. Ops disc and trying the same stuff again gave me the same results, so I thought it's time I asked you about it.
More specifically, this involves that pretty cool installation sequence of the original C&C (only a 651KB WSA version of it in CO's case) in the setup mix, as well as another file in the scores.mix, which is identified to have the odd .VAR extension, but still be considered AUD type material (like many other scores in CO, it's a remix of a C&C original track - "aoi.var", smaller than the original and 1.84MB in size). Now both files seem normal enough at first (attributes properly displayed and whatnot), but when I try to extract the WSA to an image sequence, no matter the image format, it always crashes the app. I'm guessing it may have something to do with its size, seeing as it's pretty long for such a kind of animation by general C&C standards, but I could be wrong. In the case of the VAR score, I only seem to be able to extract it raw and play it with the AV Player and that's that. Extracting it in wav format, or attempting to play it in Mixer will cause a crash. What's making this even weirder is that there's two more scores in that mix file with the same .VAR format, but they behave as expected (all of them 22.05KHz, 16-bit, mono).
Anyway, it's bugging the hell out of me and I thought you might care to have a look at them, see if they're hitting some exception of assumed rules you built the program around, or something. Could help amend a possible bug, or they could just be fucked up from start. Either way, it'd help to know.
Anyway, I've uploaded the files; you can find the files here:

K, that's all, sorry for the lengthy post. Be good now.
PS: Why the hell does this thing find it necessary to refresh the page every 6-7mins or so? Is that really needed?
PPS: Any way for the main forum index page to show me more than just 2-3 indented topics at the same page? Can't seem to find the proper option for it in Preferences.
