> do you mind if i take this opportity to ask about fast internet connections? i'm in london and thinking about getting something faster than a dumb 56k modem. can somebody tell me the pros and cons of each system. someone told me one is better for playing counterstrike and other games and the other one is better for downloading porn videos.
Well ASDL is supposedly faster and if you get it though say demon internet, you know you'll get good internet support, but its more costly than cable modems and can only be used with a BT phone exchange. Cable on the other hand is a bit slower and I don't know what the contention ratios are (ntl is a bit quiet about that) but its about half the price of ASDL. On the downside NTL have coupled it to their digital set top box as well so you probably won't be interested in it if you have sky digital or another alternative, though you could insist on a pure cable modem subscription. The installation fee is much smaller for cable too, but NTL also has a questionable customer service record. These are the only two services Im familiar with at the moment, though I expect more to be available in london than leeds where I normally live (traveling at moment). Also keep an eye on the development of mesh radio which I was reading about the other day. Seems that this upcomming technology is promised to deliver 4Mbit two way transfer even in a highly contended area. Its being tested in cardiff in wales now IIRC.
