i've just found a rather professional 3ds viewer called Opener. it runs super high detail models (that really made my viewer chug) as if they were no big deal. it's 3d accelerated of course. an interesting thing about it is that the strange smoothing problems and the meshes being misplaced problem happen in this viewer also.
